Hair jewels are the latest thing to make a special-occasion hairstyle extra special.
Kaz Ford of Hair by Kaz at Unanderra said the glittering Italian-made jewels were on tiny springs which gripped the hair and remained there as long as the wearer wanted.
``They are tasteful, look lovely and the client can have as many or as few as she likes, to create a really special effect," she said. ``Many young women preparing for their formals are choosing to have them incorporated in their hairstyles and they are able to be used over and over."
Ms Ford said the ``messy" look in up-styles was the favourite for this year's high-school formals.
``Gone are the sleek or curly looks in favour of upswept but deliberately messy styles, which may at first glance give the impression that the hair has not been dressed at all. That's not true of course, but the result is very trendy."
The hairdresser, who opened her salon seven years ago, said even those with short hair could achieve an upswept style for their special night.
``We use hair pieces and can weave any colour into the natural hair to create something individual for the client," she said.
For students wanting to be daring and different on their formal night, a complete colour change could do the trick, although Ms Ford said the subtle touch from foils often was enough to give the hair and complexion a lift.
``Many clients come in with an idea of what they want, and of course I will do that particular style for them, but I also enjoy being creative and delivering a style keeping in mind the woman's face and eye shape, colouring and the type of gown she ll be wearing."
